The Alentejo is a place of great scenic beauty with its rolling countryside of cork oaks, olive trees and vineyards. Mighty castles crown its hills and the region has a magnificent cultural heritage. Notwithstanding its appeal, the Alentejo remains unspoiled; it has not been discovered by mass tourism. We think the Alentejo is one of the last secret treasures for travellers exploring the cultures of Europe.
It's hard not to be seduced by the hospitable people and splendid historical towns of Marvão, Estremoz, Portalegre, Vila Viçosa, Borba, Monsarraz, Elvas and Évora-Monte. While the local vineyards produce some of the best red wine Portugal has to offer. They range from soft and plummy – a great match with black pork – to those with an intense ripe fruit bouquet.
The cooking here is wonderful - you'll be taught real Portuguese cooking, both homestyle and modern by experienced chefs - with an emphasis on local produce and flavours . There are visits to excellent wineries, knowledgeable local suppliers, cheese and olive oil tastings. You'll also have plenty of time to explore on your own, potter in the local shops and laze by the pool.
You will be staying at an atmospheric 4-star hotel in the centre of Evora, within the old city walls. |
