The Ribatejo stretches along both sides of the Tejo (Tagus) river, north of Lisbon. This is Portugal’s agricultural heartland with olive groves, paddy fields and sprawling vineyards - a land of rolling hills and wide plains. The region is also known for its vegetables and fruits, producing tasty irregular shaped tomatoes, beans of infinitesimal variety and much more. It has its share of culture and history with beautiful historic towns like Tomar, Santarem and Constancia. Life is unspoiled and unhurried and ambles along at its own relaxed pace.
You will be eased into the Portuguese kitchen with expert tuition from our Chef Luis, a renowned local restaurateur. Luis will teach you to cook typical Portuguese cuisine, along with regional specialities, all using only the freshest seasonal produce. And if you have a sweet-tooth, Claudia, the owner of your hotel (the Casa) and chef de Cuisine, will also teach you how to make some very tempting desserts. Accompanying each meal are the fine wines of the region, bold reds made from local grapes such as Trincadeira and Castelao and some complex whites; including the Fernao Pires and Arinto varieties.
There'll be visits to the fabulous local vineyards, wine tasting at top wineries, olive oil tasting, visits to local suppliers and time to explore and shop to your heart's content at the unspoilt local towns.
You'll stay at the Casa a 17th century manor house, lovingly transformed into an intimate and luxurious hotel. The property has spacious gardens and terraces, with spectacular views over the countryside. There are the remarkable remnants of a roman temple on site. Your favourite spot may just be by the large swimming pool, relaxing and enjoying the Portuguese sun. |
